Observational Learning

After learning about the different types of learning, I began to realize how often they were used in our everyday lives. This past Thanksgiving, I noticed how much my younger cousins were using observational learning. My little cousin kept hitting his sister which caused his mother to scold him. The last time he hit his sister, she began to point her finger at him and scold him just as their mother had previously done. After he received this scolding from his sister, he never hit her again. My little cousin (girl) observed what her mother had done each time her brother got punished for hitting her. After observing and seeing the results, she began to catch on to the consistent chastising and did it to her brother so that he would stop. Observational learning is very common and is often used with younger children, whether what they are observing is positive or negative.

  1. Antidepressant Drugs

While reading about antidepressants, remember reading an article about the very first antidepressants that were ever developed. These antidepressants filled the brain with serotonin and made the patient feel very happy and seemingly cured of his/her depression, however, after discontinuation of the antidepressants there was a high rate of suicide. This was because the brain had stopped producing serotonin and became dependent on the antidepressants. Learning about the new antidepressants helped me remember that their role was to block re uptake of serotonin rather than fill the brain with it.

  2. Sleep Deprivation

Sleep is a very important part of my life, and sometimes i dont feel like i am getting enough. It takes me hours to fall asleep sometimes and i did not think anything of it. after reading about the effects of sleep deprivation and how it influences my performance on every day tasks, i have changed my work and eating patterns so that i can sleep easier at night. I have stopped having caffeinated drinks past 3 in the afternoon, and i also turn the lights out before i get into bed so that i can wind down and fall asleep easier. since i have started doing this i feel like i fall asleep easier and i feel better during the day.

  3. Stereotypes

stereotypes are very interesting in the way they change the way a person thinks, and when i read about them in the book i realized that they affect the way i view others every day. When i was growing up i knew a boy who used to bully other kids, this boy was overweight and played lacrosse. When i got a little bit older i met another boy who fit the same description and played lacrosse very aggressively, so when he first approached me i avoided eye contact believing that he would be a jerk and try to bully me. However upon meeting him and talking with him he was a very positive person who was supportive and helpful, and i am still friends with him to this day. this experience has helped me break many other stereotypes i have and widen my perspective on life.
