Hoarding

After watching the video on hoarding, it opened my eyes to a disorder that I did not really have an understanding of. I did not know that it was such a physical and mental problem for people who suffer from it. It is mind-altering to think that people excessively collect items and can not discard them due to something psychological.

  1. This is a discussion, not a comment. Sorry for some reason it won't allow me to make my own discussions.

    HOARDING
-After watching the video, I really becan to see a new side of this disorder. I have watched the TLC show about Hoarding before and it is so terrible how it can really take over someone's life. I was also watching this show one day titled "1000 ways to die" and in one episode, this man had hoarded so much that when he passed out one day, everything in his house (all the boxes piled to the ceiling) fell on top of him and ultimately killed him. I have learned that sometimes depression or severe sadness can begin this disorder. People become so depressed that they use stuff to replace the loss and emptiness they feel. Eventually it gets to the point where they can never throw anything out at all, which ultimately could have an even more negative impact as hoarding creates social issues as well. As a result, I feel that shows like that on TLC are really good for individuals who suffer. Though hoarding can't quite be "cured" it can be managed and therapy and help from others can really push a victim of hoarding into the right direction.
