Types of therapy
Today in class we discussed two different types of therapy that seemed extremely shocking to me. First is electroconvulsive therapy, this seems to me to be an extremely strange way to treat depression but i also find it interesting how it works. The other is deep brain stimulation which also seems very interesting. It is crazy how psychiatrists can basically control the individuals emotions when they have control of the stimulation device. These types of therapy seem to be very futuristic, although as science has shown they are not.

I also found this video to be very interesting. I am amazed at the fact that doctors can now basically install emotions into a person. It is almost like looking into the future. Technology has come so far in the last one hundred years. I am amazed that they can place a pacemaker inside of a human which sends electrodes into the persons brain to make them fell happy or sad. This is a little scary though to think that peoples emotions are beginning to be controlled by machines, but it is still an example of how technology can better ones life.
ReplyDeleteAlthough electroshock therapy can be very effective, do not be mistaken as to think the effect is immediate or lasting. Many of those who recieve this therapy experience short-term memory loss. The effects are not instant, and it is not a permanent solution to disorders such as depression. Many times the patient recieves several treatments, sometimes over many years, and sometimes they are ineffective in the long run. Therapy and mediciations are often used along with ETC, and ETC is usually used as a last resort. We are not yet able to control emotions through science, and although we have made great strides in recent years, we have a long way to go.
