Freud's Psychosexual Stages
After reading about the 5 psychosexual stages, I made a connection with a family member's cigarette addiction and the Oral stage. A cousin who's around the same age as me has been smoking cigarettes since he was about 14 or 15. I know that smoking is a legitimate addiction, but I started to wonder if maybe my cousin actually had a fixation in the Oral stage. I actually did go as far as to ask my aunt about how he was when she had to teeth him, and she said he had a very hard time with teething. I believe that this extreme difficulty with teething caused him to become fixated in the oral stage, and carried over in his life later on through his constant cigarette smoking.

Elaboration in Memory
ReplyDeleteWhile i was reading about memory and how we encode information into our brains, i read about elaboration. i have used this technique of remembering information by attaching meaning to it throughout my life when i need to study for tests. i use acronyms and i make up songs in my head that help me remember terms for english and science. Reading about elaboration in the psychology book was surprising because i didnt know psychology recognized elaboration as a useful form of encoding
Freud's psychosexual stage characteristics seemed to be based too highly on common phrases. If someone is overly organized or anal-retentive does not mean they had psychological trouble during the anal stage of development. I do see a connections between oral fixations later in life and oral fixations during development. I see that as a personality characteristic not as a developmental issue.
