Therapy Motivation

Last Thursday, we spoke in class about the many techniques of therapy. However, it was also noted that even though there are many techniques, succes depends on the clients motivation to improve. One experience I have had with this is when I was so young that I don't personally remember much but am very well aware of the situation. My sister was very sick, and even though my parents and family did whatever they could to get her the therapy she needed, she wasn't motivated to receive help, and therefore was sick for an extended amount of time. At first, it was all denial, where she would say she didn't have this serious problem, and then after a time, this problem also lead to serious depression. She was sick for a couple years before she was finally in the hospital, with most of the family thinking she wouldn't make it. However, after being in the hospital for a few months, she was healthy enough to go home. This was when she finally realized she needed therapy. At this point, she found the motivation to receive therapy and try to improve. Because of this example and the many other examples out there, I fully believe the success of therapy depends on the client's motivation.
