Heredity and Environment
It is clearly understood how one's environment can shape the person they are; from where you grew up to the people you grew up with (both contribute to why a person is the way they are). It surprised me, in chapter 1, when we learned how our genes influence our behavior. I understood that our parents play a key role in how we act but, I did not know that your hereditary endowment indirectly molded you psychologically. After coming to this realization, I began to notice the genes that influenced my psycholigical makeup: from my personality, which is similar to my mothers, to interests, which are similar to my fathers.

Multiple Intelligences
ReplyDeleteI was reading the intelligence chapter in the book and i saw a diagram in which there were three different types of intelligence, social, practical and verbal. When i was growing up my teachers would encourage my class and i by telling us that just because we were not good at one subject or discipline, it didn't mean we weren't intelligent. After scoring poorly on a math test my teacher gave me an extra credit opportunity in which i could present an oral about an important mathematician, i did very well on this extra credit assignment and my teacher attributed it to my being verbally intelligent.
Phobias
ReplyDeletePhobias are unfortunate parts of peoples lives. I have friends that are very afraid of things like the dark and upon encountering situations where they are placed in dark areas, they respond in very erratic and uncontrollable outbursts of panic. After reading about systematic desensitization, i have tried helping a few of my friends with their worst fears by suggesting to them that they should increase their proximity to what scares them until they can be around the dark or whatever their fear is and not be so afraid.
