Who Seeks Therapy?
I was surprised when learning about different types of disorders and receiving therapy for them. I was surprised that 15% of the US population receives some type of therapy. This to me is suprising because you may not even know that some of your closes friends receive therapeutic help. I can remember that back in sixth grade when one of my closest friends got into a car accident and was traumatized by the entire situation. He later told our group of friends that he had to go to therapy because of the accident and he could not sleep. This was shocking at the time but after learning about different conditions and disorders, I understand that more people than we think need therapeutic help.

ReplyDeleteOCD DISCUSSION
Since middle school, I have been considered the OCD child. I always match everything, my things have to be in perfect order, if something is crooked, it is the only thing I can think about for a little bit before I go fix it, and the list goes on. However, I think about the actual disorder and I realize that I am not nearly as Obsessive Compulsive as those diagnosed with this disorder are. For example, though I wash my hands numerous times a day and always have hand sanitizer on me, there are people in the world who have to wash their hands six times in a row just to fulfill their obsession. It could be with anything for them. For example, TLC once had a show about OCD where these people with OCD were all living in and sharing one house while going through therapy at the same time. While watching this show, I saw people having to flick light switches on and off for a certain amount of times and having to wash their hands every half an hour, while using hand sanitizer in between. As a result, I don't think I even come close to having this disorder. However, I wonder if there is a black and white line between having OCD and not. Is there a gray area? Can you be slightly OCD about certain aspects. These things cross my mind from day to day, especially because of the little "OCD moments" (as I like to call them) that I exprience. I just feel that though I don't have OCD, it is still weird, for example, that I can only take an even number of steps when walking on a sidewalk between each crack or that I can never do anything in odds (have the tv volume on an odd number or eat something in an odd number. Though it seems irrational and strange, I do it so subconsciously that I don't even notice it that much anymore. It just really makes me think that maybe there isn't such a dark line between those who have disorders and do not. There must be somewhere between the two.
