Sleep and Nutrition
I read in one of my mom's magazines a while ago that those who don't get enough sleep tend to overeat. If you get the proper amount of sleep or more, you have more control over what how much you eat and what you eat. When you are extremely tired, your body wants sugars or something to wake it up. Therefore, you will tend to eat more sugars and unhealthy things when you are overtired. Your body will also crave carbohydrates and things to give it energy. This results in eating a lot of unnecessary and unhealthy foods. It is important for weight management and a healthy lifestyle to get enough sleep.

I also read a similar article today about people overeating while they are sleep deprived. Another interesting reason the article mentioned that people overeat is due to stress.
ReplyDeleteThough sleep deprivation tends to be positively correlated with with overeating, I feel that stress is definitely a third variable. Being constitanly stressed, for example, can most definitely have an impact on sleeping. When I am very stressed out, for example, I tend to wake up every few hours and never get a full night's sleep until I come to my senses and relax a little. As a result, when I am stressed out, I also tend to eat more ("food cures the soul"). As a result, all three of these factors are interrelated when it comes to one's personal health and well being.

This really interested me because I had no idea that this happened. I do sleep less at college and I now realize that I am also more hungry than usual. I find myself snacking during the day. I am also always really hungry late at night when I am more tired. I will sometimes have a snack right before I go to sleep which is not necessarily a good idea.
ReplyDeleteGoing along with what Jordan posted above, I find myself sleeping much less at college because I have early classes and do not get to sleep early enough at night. I have also found myself craving sugary snacks throughout the day to keep my mind alert, since I am so tired. I would really like to read this article because I find it interesting that two seeming different processes, sleeping and eating, could so easily effect one another.
