Visual illusions

While reading chapter 4 I came across an interesting phenomena, The Muller-Lyer illusion. Everyone at some point in their lifetime has come across an optical illusion, one that involves 2 lines that look totally different lengths when put next to one another, however when one measures them, they are in fact the exact same length. Or the illusion in our book with a monster chasing another monster down a corridor. It took me a while and a ruler just to be sure because they look so different in size. It was interesting to read further that Western nations are more affected by the Muller-Lyer Illusion because we see right angles, and rectangles everyday. Thus, making us more susceptible to the illusion when compared to a culture such as the Zulu's who don't have such a hard time with the phenomena. Their lack of rectangular structures, and right angles allows them to see the true length in these optical illusions.

  1. The fact that location can effect the way people see things really amazes me and it is what I love the most about psychology. I also think this is the reason why it is so hard to make a perfect inteligence test, because everybody is effected differently by where they live and what things they experience every day.
