the power of attractiveness
In chapter 15 we learned about social psychology. I was most interested in the proven effects that physical appearance has. Studies show that good-looking people hold other people's attention more immediately and for a longer period of time than those who aren't considered as attractive. Judgements based on personality are also made based on appearance, such as whether or not a person is friendly or trustworthy. I have seen through experience that many people who are considered attractive recieve more attention and respect than those who aren't. Celebrities are paid a large amount of attention, even though some of them did little to achieve their success, while other people, such as firefighters and nurses, who actually help others, recieve little recognition. It is tragic that in society looks are prized above intelligence and talent. According to the book, another study found that people judge competence is based on facial apprearance alone. From everything from high school popularity to recieving high-paying careers, people who happen to be born with certain physical features usually recieve more attention and success.

When my older sister attended college she was a psych major. One year she had to conduct an expirement where she took a number of male and females, differing in attractiveness, and had people name what they would recieve for a superalative in high school. She had eight choices from class clown, most popular to most likely to end up in jail or to ditch graduation. As suspected, the most attractive people got the most generous superalatives, and the least attractive got the worst ones. I agree that assumptions of personality are based on appearance.
