Overconfidence
One of the most common barriers to problem solving is overconfidence. It is always a good thing to be confident with what you do and what you say, but often times overconfidence is simply a bad thing. When someone is overconfident, they believe their answers are more accurate than they actually are and can also be overconfident about future accomplishments. I feel as though when people argue about something, especially teenagers or young adults, they will be so confident when argueing the fact that they won't be open to listen to what anyone else has to say. I have at times been someone who is overconfident with some sort of fact, whether it be an old sports fact, or something that happened in the past. There have been so many times I have heard my friends or even myself say something such as, how much do you want to bet that I'm right? At this point both people believe they have to be right and are overconfident. This causes arguements, and in the end often doesn't even lead to the real answer being found. One of the biggest barriers for myself when it comes to problem solving is exactly that, overconfidence.

I find overconfidence to be good and bad. Sometimes, being too confident can affect your performance negatively. If you believe that you are going to do well, or succeed, you may not try as hard. In some situations, though, I believe that it can be reversed. It might be good to be overconfident because that may cause someone to perform even better, just to show that they truly are the best, even though they already believe it, they want to prove it to everyone else.
ReplyDeleteOverall, in most cases overconfidence is going to produce heavy disappointment in negative outcomes, but it could also lead to a positive outcome.
I agree with you Julia that confidence can be both a good and bad thing. When a person is overconfident, it most definitely can have the opposite effect on an individual. For example, when sports teams are overconfident in their chances of beating another team, they often find themselves struggling or even being beat by the team that was thought to be so easy to triumpth. On the other side, being confident causes people to feel better about themselves and thus can accomplish great things. However, there is a fine line between overconfidence and confidence and too often people step over that line.

I also agree, I find that sometimes when people are overconfident, they can appear to be ignorant or narrow minded, and not open to other people's opinions. Also, I remember that when I was first learning to drive, my father would always say "Nikki, be confident about your abilities, but don't get overconfident". I believe that he told me this to prevent my driving from getting sloppy or careless. Similarly, in school, I find that if I become overconfident about something that I am learning, my work may become sloppy, and I no longer am as attentive in class. I believe that this can be detrimental in the long run.
