Obsessive- Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
Obsessive-compulsive disorder is marked by persistent, uncontrollable intrusions of unwanted thoughts (obsessions) and urges to engage in senseless rituals (compulsions). It is interesting reading from the book the true meaning of OCD because it is often a term that is thrown around lightly. I have been personally told that I am acting as if i have "OCD" , though I do not have the disorder. I believe that OCD is something that should not be taken lightly because it is a serious illness that many people do not understand due to ignorance.

I definitely agree. I hear the term "OCD" used to describe usually normal behaviors a lot. I think it would be insulting for someone who actually suffers from this disorder to hear the phrase used so loosely. Although I myself do not have Obbessive Complusive disorder, one of my old closest friends does. I saw her struggles daily to maintain stability and to deal with her complusions, and it's sad that such a crippling disorder is mocked so often and used so carelessly.
ReplyDeleteI agree. I do have some "OCD" like habbits, but they're very small now, however they used to be pretty severe when I was younger. My biggest ritual was compulsive hand washing. I would obsessively wash my hands until my skin was raw because I never felt they were clean enough. Although I did this and other "rituals" often, they were definetly more severe when I felt that I was under stress. Over the years I've learned to deal with stress better, so although I still do have some small compulsive habits, they are not so serious that they get in the way of every day life. I can't stand when I hear people say "I have OCD" when talking about little strange habits that they do. My case wasn't the most extreme case of OCD, but some OCD is very serious and it's not a term that should be thrown around to describe any little thing.
