Dreams
The book talks about the human experience of dreams, and the frequency of adults to have a pattern of dreams that reflect their lives. No one really knows the purpose of dreams, but still, the concept interests me. It makes me wonder what my dreams mean. Most of mine don't follow any particular pattern, as stated in the book. I have had dreams about a few things on the chart, but I can't understand how they reflect my life and my supposed "internal struggle"; the conflicts in my life are not relevant to most of the types of dreams listed. I am really fascinated by this, and it makes me wonder the purpose of my weird dreams. It makes me wonder if subconsciously, there's something going on within myself that I'm not aware of, and makes me wonder if I'll ever be able to fully understand the nature of my dreams.

The nature dreams and the significance of different interpretations depending on a persons culture stood out to me in the book as well. Dreams do not have as much significance in our society as they do in other cultures such as New Guinea Arapesh. Therefore, I often cannot remember my dreams after waking. The only time I do remember my dreams is if someone wakes me up, most likely in my REM cycle. Since dreams fascinate me as well, I wish that I was able to remember some of my dreams sometimes.
ReplyDeleteDreams are also a fascinating thing to me as well. I feel as I was younger I used to remember my dreams a lot more clearly. When being woken up early for school I would usually be woken from a dream and often times wish I could return to sleep and continue that dream. Although not a lot of emphasis is put in dreams in our culture, I do believe they focus around my everyday life. Often times, if I don't talk about someone or see someone in a long time, but then they come up on a certain day, they may randomly be in a dream of mine. All these things are very interesting in my mind, but I do wish I could remember my dreams as I used to as a younger child.
ReplyDeleteWhere my dreams come from, and what they mean to me is puzzling to me at times. Sometimes I will have a dream that is so vivid that later on the day I will be confused as to weather or not it actually happened. I also find it interesting that when I nap during the day my dreams are very strange. Not only are they strange but I am always able to remember exactly what happened in them. When waking up from sleeping through the course of the night I have trouble remembering a lot of my dreams. Why is it easier for me to remember exactly what happens in my dreams during a nap in the middle of the day? One reason may be that my REM sleep cycle is significantly shortened and as a result I do not have as many dreams.
ReplyDeleteAfter reviewing dreams in class, it made me think about my own dreams. Waking up in the morning one of the first things that comes to my mind is what I was just dreaming about. Somethimes you just dont want the dream to end and if the dream feels long then your REM cycle is probably longer than other nights. I agree with the post above me. When I take a nap it is much easier to recall what I was just dreaming about but when I go to sleep for an extended period of time it is harder to remember the dream.
ReplyDeleteI have not remembered a dream in a very long time. I am wondering why that is the case. Every morning I wake up and see if I can remeber what I dreamt about, but every time I fail. It does not matter if I am taking a nap or not, I cam never remember my dreams. I wish I could remember them I would like to know what my mind is doing while my body is resting.
ReplyDeleteLike Max, I have an extremely hard time remembering my dreams. Up until a few years ago, I could recall my dreams very easily the following day. As mentioned in one of the above comments, I'm wondering if age has anything to do with one's tendency to remember their dreams. I also find that I am more apt to remember my dreams if I have an out of the ordinary experience that day or if I think about a lot right as I drift into sleep. My unconscious mind really does continue my thoughts that I had while still awake, yet alters them as I drift deeper into sleep.
