Overconfidence
One of the biggest barriers to problem solving is overconfidence. People can be overconfident about facts they know, or overconfident about their future. Confidence itself usually isn't a bad thing. It is good to go into a game or an exam with confidence, but you never want to be too confident. Overconfidence often times leads to a lack of preparation or focus. If one of the best teams in the league plays one of the worst in the league and they are overconfident there could be problems. They might not go into the game focused, and could find themselves behind early. Many times when two friends argue about something small, they both are 100% sure in their head they are right. When someone is so overconfident it could affect the problem solving process and be detrimental. Although confidence is always a good thing, it easy to be overconfident, and that is something that should be avoided.

Overconfidence can often lead to unfavorable results. I know that I try not to go into an exam overconfident. When I do, I tend to usually under-prepare and end up doing poorly on it, even if the material is basic. Therefore, I try to keep myself in check and take each subject seriously even if I find the material easy in order to prepare adequately for each test given to me. Therefore, I can avoid negative results and disappointment.

ReplyDeletei agree. understanding the idea of overconfidence can help prevent many problems. i think that the many reasoning for overconfidence has to do with a persons need for feeling good at a specific. there are not too many people in this world that like the idea of being bas a something especially in such a competitive country like the US. So instead of admitting to there lack of knowledge of a specific topic or task, they force themselves and others to believe that they know what they are doing. thus resulting in a negative outcome
ReplyDeleteI agree with the previous two posts because especially as an athlete there is a fine line between confidence and cockiness. When you are competing to be the best in whatever you do whether it be sports, studies, or work, you need to have confidence in what you do to get the job done. On the same note, you need not to be cocky or overconfident because that is when arrogance sets in and as Nick posted a good example is when Pedro thought he did not need to come out of the game and ended up losing because he was too overconfident.
