Overconfidence

After learning about barriers to problem solving in chapter 8 I began to think how examples of barriers, such as overconfidence come up in everyday life. We learned that people are overconfident about future accomplishment, the quality of a predicted performance, and the quality of past performances. I noticed in chemistry lab the other day that my professor was overconfident about future accomplishments. She had a short power-point lecture to give us before we began the lab and she only said it would take ten minutes. Twenty minutes later she was still not done, therefore, she was overconfident about her ability to present the material in a short amount of time.

  1. While your teacher underestimated the amount of time it would take for her to present her material, I've had teachers overestimate how much time they would take to teach a lesson. Often in my english class, my teacher will believe that the lesson she has planned for the day will take up the entire class period, when actually we have plenty of class time left over by the time she finishes presenting her material. She is overconfident about her future accomplishments as well, because while she often thinks she has a detailed, lengthy lesson that will take the whole class period to present, it turns out to be just the opposite.

  2. I can completely relate to this. I am often overconfident that I've done well on an assignment or test, but often, I receive just a good grade. Also, I feel that my overconfidence in this matter affects how much I study, because I feel that I know the information well. However, I've slowly learned how this affects my problem-solving abilities, and I have tried to not be so overconfident and accept all possibilities.

  3. I agree that sometimes I am over confident in my work, and what I know. Sometimes I feel I do better with homework and assignments then I actually do and I should spend more time on them. Also, I can be overconfident on how much I study. I may feel that I know enough material to do well on tests but most of the time I wish I had studied more.

  4. I absolutely can relate to being over confident in any area of my life, whether it be with a homework assignment, a test, quiz or even a sporting event. It is one thing to be so sure of your work that the grade, or outcome will be a positive one. However, when you finally get back that exam, or see the final score of your favorite teams recent game. It might be a disappointment when you see the final result. it is sometimes worse when you are overconfident about something rather than hoping for the best.

  5. I was over confident in my work, but college was an eye opener. Teachers are always finding places for you to improve on. As this semester has gone on I have really had to change my habits of studying and time management. What I did in high school I was way too confident and it could not translate to college. I was over confident in my abilities and college was a rude awakening.
