The Impact of Technology
In the video we watched last week, many scientists and school personel talked about how technology, such as cell phones and video games, have an effect on the performance of their students. I can definitely relate to this, because I am constantly checking Facebook and my phone to see if I have any new messages. Most of the time, I am so focused on my electronic devices that I lose my focus, which impacts my work. However, since I've been in college, I felt that I have been able to improve that side of myself. I now understand the importance of my education here, and I have been trying to stay away from Facebook, my cell phone, and other electronic items while I am in class or working on an assignment. I could relate to the students in the video completely, because I understand firsthand what those electronic outlets can do to one's ability to concentrate. The video said something along the lines of "students are constantly seeking immediate gratification", and I can attest to that completely. For me, the internet was once a struggle to control and it made it hard for me to succeed. But now, I feel that I have been able to control how much time I spend on it, and therefore, have increased my school performance.

I agree that technology can be a very distracting thing. I often sit down to do homework and then realize 30 minutes later that all I have done was go online or text my friends. It is difficult to just stop this all together when one wants immediate gratification. If a student wants to get better grades, then the first step would probably be to set aside time to do homework not near a phone or computer.
ReplyDeleteI can definitely relate to this. I would get so much more done in my life without the distraction of technology. Things like Facebook are pointless and a waste of time, yet a lot of people use it anyway as a source of entertainment. I have procasinated doing assignments many times due to the lure of a computer or cell phone. Obviously, I regret this, because it could impact my grade and my sleep schedule, and it takes longer to complete the assignment. I think I should try to focus more at the task at hand until it's done and only then should I bring my attention to mindless entertainment.
ReplyDeleteI agree that technology is very distracting but some people just seem to have an addiction to it. When I have to get something done I know to put everything away and just concentrate on my work. Sometimes I just don't understand why people can't stop using technology and just live their lives normally. I mean, people lived for thousands of years without technology, why can't we just put it away for a few minutes?
ReplyDeleteMy blackberry has been the sole reason why i lose out on a lot of studying time that i planned to get done whenever I go to the library. It is shocking how sometimes I don't even realize how much time I actually waste while in the library or at my desk on my cell phone. The impact it has on me is second only to my lack of interest in a certain subject for any class i dislike. I find that when my phone is out of battery or I leave it in my room, i am able to get twice as much work done in half the time and then i am able to do what I want after. If only forgetting my phone in my room was always so easy, I would actually get more work done in less time.
ReplyDeleteI also can relate to this. Just this past weekend I was attempting to write a 6 page paper for my English class. I had to make a conscious effort to stay away from Facebook, and even that failed. I found myself taking "breaks" to see what was going on on Facebook, and who had text messaged me since the last time I checked. Eventually, I was able to finish my assignment, but I realized how technology had become such a major part of my life. I discovered that I was more reliant on it than I should be, and for no real reason in particular. If people were able to live and communicate with each other before Facebook and before cell phones, why can't we? Unfortunately I feel as though our generation has been raised under the expectations that we are obligated to be the first of our friends to receive and use the newest form of technology and it becomes a huge part of our lives.
ReplyDeleteTechnology plays a big part as a distraction in almost every college students life. The idea of being able to be updated on all your friends becomes overwhelming and often makes you become distracted from work you need to do. A friend of mine often puts off work to the last minute because she becomes distracted with her phone, facebook or the television. She finds herself to be completely unable to get work done until she is put on the clock. I also agree that people today always want the newest and best thing on the market with money often being spent left and right.
