Culture and Personality

After reading the section on culture and personality in the text book I got really curious on how different cultures are similar or contrasting in respect to personality. My roommate is an international student so I asked her about her ideas about personality and they were about the same as mine. I actually expected more of a difference in how personality is perceived. Her personality is actually quite different from mine so I wonder if this could be from the culture difference. I tend to be more quiet and shy and she is very outgoing and loud.

  1. I know firsthand that culture has an extreme impact on our personality. I have studied abroad in Finland and India, both very different from the US. In Finland, everyone was much more reserved than we are because of the way that they are raised and taught to be. In India, they are warm, outgoing and want to share everything even though they have nothing. These cultures are so different from ours, so no doubt there is a difference in personality as well.

  2. I was raised in Georgia in a small town right outside of Atlanta. Down there, everyone was very polite, southern hospitality, very stereotypically southern community. I was raised to have mannners say please and thank you, go fishing, like trucks because thats how my community was. The culture down there effected everyones personality and deffinatly effected mine. The culture down there is so laid back and caring, and thats how everyone was.
